German engineers were able to double the energy density of lithium batteries


The land and all the more air electric transport needs batteries capable of saving more energy without becoming too heavy. The team of scientists from Germany demonstrated a new lithium-metal battery with an energy density of 560 W * h / kg, which is 2 times the density of existing commercial lithium-ion batteries. At the same time, the prototype of the new battery is very slowly degrading — lost only 12% of the capacity after 1000 cycles of charging-discharge.

Specialists of the Karlsruhe Institute and Institute. Helmholts in Ulme began to search for solving the problem of low energy density of batteries with a rich nickel and poor cobalt NCM88 cathode and organic electrolyte LP30. However, despite the fact that the cathode well showed itself from the point of view of energy density, such a battery architecture turned out to be unstable: cracks occurred in the cathode, and the electrolyte reaction destroyed the structure. The test results showed that the lithium-metal battery with such an architecture has an energy density of 560 W * h / kg. According to analysts, overcoming the figure of 500 W * h / kg should become an important stage in the development of electrical transport. The energy density of modern lithium-ion batteries is 250-300 W * h / kg.

As for the service life, the new battery also showed itself from the best side — retained 88% of the initial capacity of 214 mA * b / g in the cathode after 1000 cycles. And on the current exit, the battery efficiency was 99.94%, like existing commercial lithium-ion batteries.
