The new work of scientists confirms that it is never too late to improve the diet and add fatty fish. At the same time, even small changes will benefit.
Omega-3 is polyunsaturated fatty acids, the main source of which may be fatty fish — salmon, sardines, anchovies, herring. Their regular presence in the diet showed almost a five-year increase in the life expectancy of participants.
Scientists compared these results with harm to smoking. It is believed that this habit reduces life expectancy by an average of 4.7 years. The additive of Omega-3 in the diet just «returns the same», the authors clarified.
It is noteworthy that two saturated fatty acids, which traditionally contacted the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, also have benefited. «These results again confirm that not all saturated fatty acids are necessarily harmful,» the co-author of the work of Alais Sala-Vila commented.
Scientists also noted that even small changes in the diet would benefit. «It will bring a much more powerful effect than it seems to us and start it never too late,» they added.
