Scientists have proven the direct relationship between the consumption of red meat and intestinal cancer

Scientists have discovered several mutation patterns, including the form of DNA damage called alkylation. From previous studies, scientists knew that the consumption of red meat especially influenced the development of tumors in the distal colon department. Now they found that cancer cells from this intestinal department have higher alkylating damage.

They then determined that the most common mutations with colorectal cancer — Kras G12D, Kras G13D and Pik3ca E545K are also associated with increased alkylation.

«The data indicate that the consumption of red meat can cause alkylating damages that lead to KRAS and PIK3CA mutations that promote cancer development,» said the collaborator of Marios Giannakis.

Prevention of intestinal cancer

Due to the fact that scientists managed to associate patients with alkylation levels, now the doctors may have new opportunities for early diagnosis and cancer prevention. Alkylating mutations can be used as a biomarker to identify people from a group of increased risk or already sick patients at an early stage of the disease. Further research must confirm this opportunity before doctors have accurate laboratory tests for such diagnostics.
