The experiment again confirmed that walking significantly prolongs life

Researchers collected the readings of the fitness trackers of 17 thousand women over 60 years old — studied the pace and duration of walking. After several years, scientists compared the data obtained with the current state of the health of the experiment participants. It turned out that among those who passed at least 2000 steps continuously — without stopping and pauses — the mortality rate was 32% lower than among those who led a low-wear lifestyle.

In the United States, the recommendations of the cardiological fitness association for adults make up at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of intensive workouts per week, but most people do not regularly and do not even fulfill these simple rules.

The team from North Carolina University in Chapel-Hill decided to evaluate how daily activity affects the health of the elderly in the long run. The experiment was attended by almost 17 thousand women over 60 years, which approximately during the week were constantly carried on the waist fitness tracker to assess the duration and intensity of steps.

All participants were divided into two groups. The first included those who daily went for more than ten minutes a day continuously or with minor breaks. It could be said that walked every day. In the second group, the activity was «forced» — short periods of walking during the fulfillment of everyday actions — the rise in the steps, walking towards the car, etc.

All participants were observed for about six years. During this time, scientists recorded 804 deaths (16,732 participants).
